In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Iraq is characterized to contain the third largest oil reserve in the world after Saudi Arabia and Iran, three quarters of that reserve is found in seven largest fields: West Qurna, Al- Rumaila, Majnoon, Kirkuk, East Baghdad, Al- Zubair and Bin Omar. The majority of these fields are located in Southern Iraq, particularly, in Basra, the matter that makes Basra and Iraq in desperate need for a specialized university that can provide efficient and qualified personnel capable of managing oil and gas wealth as well as their future industries.
Based on the foregoing and the blessings of God, on 26/02/2014, Basra University for Oil and Gas (BUOG) was established according to the Eighth Amendment Law of Higher Education and Scientific Research Law No.40 of 1988. It is the first energy specialized Iraqi University that includes the following fields:
As well as other disciplines required to support the energy sector of Iraq.
The university adopted a specific strategy to prepare proposals and educational programs and curriculum compatible with those of the sober international universities and the requirements of the Integrated National Strategy that have been approved by the Council of Ministers in June 2013 as a State Policy in the field of energy.
BUOG seeks to hold cultural and scientific agreements with the international and regional universities, in addition to the ambitious programs of the university to cooperate with the oil companies in the oil sector in Basra and Iraq.
Our university takes on the quality program and the academic accreditation regarding its overall plans and is seeking accreditation by the leading international organizations in this field, including the ABET.
Lastly, I would like to express my hearty wishes for our students to achieve excellence and success in their educational life and their future career; they represent the fruit of our efforts that shall participate in the development of our beloved country, Iraq.
