In line with the initiative of the esteemed Prime Minister to plant five million trees and palms, and in support of the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research aimed at expanding the green space and achieving environmental sustainability, the University of Basra for Oil and Gas launched, on Sunday morning, October 11, 2026, a voluntary campaign to plant trees within the university campus, with the aim of improving the environmental and aesthetic reality of the university and creating a healthy and suitable university environment for students and teaching staff.

The campaign witnessed the planting of a number of seedlings and trees inside the university campus, with the participation of a number of professors and students, in a step that reflects the university’s interest in supporting environmental initiatives and promoting a culture of afforestation and preserving green spaces within educational institutions.

This initiative comes within the framework of supporting national efforts aimed at increasing green spaces, given the importance of afforestation in improving air quality, reducing the effects of pollution, and moderating the atmosphere, as well as adding aesthetic touches to the university environment and promoting awareness of the importance of preserving natural resources.

For his part, Mr. Muhammad Imad Shaheeb, the head of the horticulture unit, confirmed that the afforestation work will continue continuously, with care taken to select plant species suitable for the local environment and to identify appropriate locations for planting them in a way that ensures their growth and preservation, and contributes to achieving a more beautiful, vibrant and sustainable university environment.
